SPANISH TRANSITIONAL ~ PARTIAL RENOVATION

We approached this project in three distinct phases. Fortunately, the lower level had its own small kitchen and two bedrooms, which allowed the clients to live comfortably downstairs while the upper level was under renovation. Living through a renovation is never easy—let alone living in it—but they handled it with grace and flexibility.

As you transition downstairs, the home shifts into full-on entertaining mode. The brief? “Let the kids get loud and the parents get louder.” They wanted a space for gaming, watching sports, hosting friends, and most importantly, serving cocktails from the bar. New folding doors now open up the main room to the outdoor kitchen and pool area, blurring the line between inside and out.

We kept the existing structural walls and worked with the original tile flooring, a rarity in this level of renovation. With plenty of closet space to spare, we converted one to the right of the fireplace into a cozy built-in seating nook. The area beneath the stairs became a temperature-controlled wine cellar, making use of every inch.

The bar retained its original footprint, but little else stayed the same. A new arched back wall, zellige tile, and bespoke cabinetry nod subtly to the home’s Spanish influences. Vintage iron lighting fixtures were added throughout to bring balance and warmth to a room that now holds pool and foosball tables, and a lot of great memories in the making.

The result is a layered, multifunctional lower level that feels both grounded in the home’s architectural roots and completely tailored to how this family lives and entertains. It’s a space where every detail, from the copper countertops to the converted wine cellar, was designed to invite connection, celebration, and ease. A true extension of the home, and a reflection of the people who bring it to life.
